The 27 Nakshatras: what your birth star means

Where your Sun sign is one of twelve, your nakshatra is one of twenty seven. Nakshatras divide the zodiac into finer slices, and the one the Moon occupied at your birth is your Janma Nakshatra, or birth star. Many Vedic astrologers read it before anything else, because it speaks to instinct and inner nature.

What a nakshatra is

The Moon travels the full zodiac in about 27 days, spending roughly a day in each nakshatra. Each one spans 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the sky and carries its own symbol, ruling planet, and personality. Ashwini, the first, is quick and pioneering. Rohini is fertile and magnetic. Anuradha is loyal and devoted. There are twenty seven in all, and each is divided further into four padas, or quarters.

Why your birth nakshatra matters

In Vedic astrology the Moon is the mind, so the nakshatra it sits in colors how you feel, react, and relate. It often describes day to day temperament more accurately than the Sun sign. Your nakshatra also sets your starting Dasha, the planetary period that times the chapters of your life, so it quietly shapes your whole timeline.

Nakshatras in matching and timing

Birth stars are central to Kundali matching. The Tara and Nadi koots both draw on nakshatra position, which is why two people can share a Sun sign yet match very differently. Nakshatras are also used to pick a Muhurat, an auspicious window for weddings, travel, and new beginnings.

Finding and using yours

To find your nakshatra you need your birth date, time, and place, because it depends on the Moon's exact position. Once you know it, read its symbol and ruling planet first, then its general nature.
