Mangal Dosha (Manglik): meaning and remedies

Mangal Dosha, or being Manglik, is one of the most discussed points in Kundali matching. Here is what it actually means, how it is checked, and the traditional remedies.

Few terms come up in matching as often as Manglik. Being Manglik, or having Mangal Dosha, is treated as a serious factor, and it causes a lot of worry. Most of that worry eases once you understand what it actually describes.

What Mangal Dosha is

Mangal Dosha, also called Kuja Dosha, occurs when Mars sits in certain houses of the birth chart, usually the first, fourth, seventh, eighth, or twelfth from the Lagna. Mars is the planet of energy, drive, and heat. In these houses, tradition holds that its intensity can create friction in marriage and partnership if it is not balanced.

How it is checked

A reader looks at where Mars falls from the Lagna, and often from the Moon and Venus as well. The strength of that placement matters. Mars in its own sign or well supported by benefic planets behaves very differently from a weak or afflicted Mars. This is why a blanket label rarely tells the full story.

When two Mangliks match

A long held tradition is that when both partners are Manglik, the dosha is considered cancelled or greatly reduced, because the same intensity exists on both sides. Many matches that look difficult on the label resolve cleanly once both charts are read together rather than in isolation.

Traditional remedies

Tradition offers several parihar, or remedies, for Mangal Dosha. Common ones include specific prayers and fasts on Tuesdays, charitable acts, and in some communities a symbolic ceremony performed before marriage. None of these is a magic switch. They are best understood as practices that, alongside a careful reading of both charts, put the placement in perspective rather than letting a single word decide a marriage.

Common questions

What does it mean to be Manglik?

Being Manglik means Mars sits in certain houses of your birth chart (commonly the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th). Tradition holds this can add intensity to marriage unless it is balanced.

Is Mangal Dosha cancelled if both partners are Manglik?

Traditionally yes. When both partners are Manglik, the dosha is considered cancelled or greatly reduced, because the same Mars intensity exists on both sides.

What are the remedies for Mangal Dosha?

Common parihar include Tuesday prayers and fasts, charity, and in some communities a symbolic pre-marriage ceremony. They work best alongside a full reading of both charts.
