Guna Milan, also called Ashtakoot or Kundali matching, scores the compatibility of two birth charts out of 36 points. It is the traditional first step in arranging a marriage, and the number gives a quick read on how two people's charts fit. The score matters, but so does what sits behind it.
The eight koots, and what they weigh
The 36 points are split across eight koots, each worth a different amount. Varna (1 point) looks at temperament. Vashya (2) looks at mutual influence. Tara (3) weighs health and well being. Yoni (4) covers physical and instinctive compatibility. Graha Maitri (5) measures mental and emotional friendship. Gana (6) compares nature, whether each person is more gentle, driven, or restless. Bhakoot (7) looks at love and family prosperity. Nadi (8) carries the most weight and relates to health and progeny.
What counts as a good score
As a rule of thumb, 18 out of 36 or above is considered a workable match, and scores in the high twenties or above are seen as strong. A score below 18 is not an automatic no. It is a prompt to look closer at which koots are low and why, because a single weak area can pull the total down while everything else is excellent.
Why the number is only the start
Two doshas deserve special attention. Nadi dosha (when both charts share the same Nadi) and Bhakoot dosha can lower a match even when the overall feeling is good. Tradition also offers parihar, or remedies, for many of these, which is why an experienced reading weighs far more than the raw score. The number is a summary, not a verdict.
