Your Janam Kundali is simply a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. Every planet was sitting somewhere, and that arrangement is what the chart records. Once you know what the pieces mean, you can read your own chart without any jargon.

What a Janam Kundali actually is

A Kundali is a snapshot, not a prediction written in stone. It shows where the Sun, Moon, and planets stood against the twelve signs of the zodiac at your birth. North Indian charts are diamond shaped with the houses fixed and the signs moving. South Indian charts are square with the signs fixed and the houses moving. Both hold the exact same information, just drawn differently.

The twelve houses and what each one rules

The chart is divided into twelve houses, and each house governs an area of life. The first house is you, your body and the way you meet the world. The fourth is home and mother, the seventh is marriage and partnership, the tenth is career and reputation. When you read a chart, you are really asking which planets sit in which houses, because that shows where your energy concentrates.

The nine planets, or Navagraha

Vedic astrology works with nine grahas: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. Each one carries a theme. Jupiter expands and protects whatever it touches. Saturn slows things down and asks for patience and discipline. Mars brings drive and heat. Reading a chart is partly noticing which of these voices is loudest for you.

Your Lagna, the rising sign that anchors everything

The Lagna, or Ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It sets the first house and therefore the whole frame of the chart. This is why your birth time matters so much. A difference of a few minutes can change the Lagna and shift every house with it.

How to start reading your own chart

Begin with three things: your Lagna, your Moon sign, and where the strongest planet sits. Read the house it occupies, then the sign, then ask what that combination is trying to do. You do not need to memorize everything at once. Most people start with the Moon, because in Vedic astrology the Moon is the mind, and it often describes how you actually feel day to day far better than the Sun sign alone.
