Ascendant (Lagna): why your rising sign matters most

Ask a Western astrologer for your sign and they will give you your Sun sign. Ask a Vedic astrologer and they will reach first for your Lagna, your ascendant or rising sign. For Vedic astrology, this is the single most important point in the chart, and it explains why your birth time matters so much.

What the Lagna is

The Lagna is the sign of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. As the Earth turns, a new sign rises roughly every two hours, so the ascendant changes through the day. That is why two people born on the same date but at different times can have very different charts.

Why it anchors everything

The Lagna sets the first house, and therefore every other house follows from it. Change the rising sign and you change which house each planet falls into, which reshapes the whole reading. This is the reason an accurate birth time is so valuable. Without it, the houses, and much of the chart's meaning, are uncertain.

What the rising sign describes

Where the Sun sign speaks to your core and the Moon to your mind, the rising sign speaks to your frame: your physical presence, your instincts, and the lens through which you meet life. It is often the part of you that others notice first, before they know anything else about you.

Finding and using yours

To find your Lagna you need your birth date, time, and place. Once you know it, read it as the doorway to the whole chart. Look at the sign itself, then at any planets sitting in the first house, then at where the Lagna's ruling planet has gone. Those three steps tell you a great deal about how your whole life is set up.
