Gemstones in Vedic astrology: which stone for which planet

Gemstones are one of the most popular remedies in Vedic astrology. The idea is simple: each of the nine planets is linked to a gemstone, and wearing the right stone is said to strengthen that planet's good qualities in your life. The catch is that the right stone depends entirely on your own chart.

The nine planets and their stones

The classic pairings, together called the Navratna, are: Ruby for the Sun, Pearl for the Moon, Red Coral for Mars, Emerald for Mercury, Yellow Sapphire for Jupiter, Diamond for Venus, Blue Sapphire for Saturn, Hessonite (Gomed) for Rahu, and Cat's Eye for Ketu. Each is meant to channel its planet's energy when that planet needs support.

Why the chart comes first

A gemstone is not chosen by your sun sign or by which planet is weak in general. It is chosen from the strength and role of the planet in your specific chart, often tied to the lord of your Lagna or your current Dasha. A stone that lifts one person can unsettle another, which is why a careful reading should always come before a purchase.

The stones to respect

Some stones are gentle and widely recommended, like Yellow Sapphire and Pearl. Others are powerful and demand caution. Blue Sapphire (Neelam) is famously fast acting and is usually tested before being worn for good. Hessonite and Cat's Eye, tied to the nodes, are also strong. With these, the traditional advice is to go slowly and only on sound guidance.

How stones are worn

Tradition pairs each stone with a metal, a finger, and a day of the week for first wearing, and often a mantra. The stone is meant to touch the skin so its energy can reach you. None of this is a shortcut around effort. A gemstone is best understood as support for a planet you are already working with, not a substitute for the work itself.
