Rahu and Ketu: the lunar nodes in your chart

Rahu and Ketu are the two most mysterious points in a Vedic chart. They are not physical planets. They are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the path of the Sun, the places where eclipses happen. Because of that, they are called the shadow planets, and they carry a pull all their own.

What the nodes are

Rahu is the north node and Ketu is the south node, and they always sit exactly opposite each other in the chart. Astronomically they mark the eclipse points. Symbolically, Rahu is the head without a body, all hunger and ambition, and Ketu is the body without a head, all instinct and detachment. Together they describe an axis of desire and release.

Rahu, the planet of hunger

Rahu amplifies whatever it touches and points to what you crave in this life. It can bring sudden gains, obsession, foreign connections, and a restless drive to have more. Its house and sign show where you feel an almost insatiable pull, and where the lesson is to chase wisely rather than endlessly.

Ketu, the planet of release

Ketu is the opposite current. It points to what you already mastered and are here to let go of. Its placement often shows an area where you feel oddly detached or where things fall away no matter how you grip them. Ketu can bring deep insight and spirituality, but also a tendency to undervalue the very thing it governs.

Reading the nodal axis

Because Rahu and Ketu sit opposite, they form an axis, and the most useful reading looks at both ends together. One end shows where you reach forward, the other where you let go. Their Dasha periods, especially Rahu's long eighteen year cycle, are often the most transformative stretches of a life. Treat them less as good or bad and more as the chart's growth edge.
