A birth chart shows the shape of a life, but Dasha shows the timing. Dasha is the system that tells you which planet is running the show in any given stretch of years, and it is one of the things that sets Vedic astrology apart from the Western tradition.
What a Dasha is
A Dasha is a planetary period. The most widely used system is Vimshottari Dasha, a 120 year cycle divided among the nine planets. During each planet's Mahadasha, or major period, the themes of that planet come forward. A Jupiter Mahadasha tends to bring growth, learning, and opportunity. A Saturn Mahadasha asks for patience, structure, and hard earned results.
Why your nakshatra sets the clock
The Dasha you are born into is decided by your birth nakshatra and exactly how far the Moon had moved through it. That is why two people born on the same day at different times can be running completely different periods. It is also why an accurate birth time matters so much for timing predictions.
Mahadasha and Antardasha
Each major period is divided into sub periods called Antardashas, run by the other planets in turn. So you might be in a Jupiter Mahadasha with a Saturn Antardasha, and the flavor of that stretch is a blend of the two. Reading both layers together is how astrologers narrow a forecast from a decade down to a season.
How to use Dasha in practice
Look at which Mahadasha you are in, then the current Antardasha, then check how those planets sit in your birth chart. A planet that is strong and well placed tends to give its best during its period. A weak or troubled one asks for more care.
